Research Description: 

Current research efforts span refractory multi-principal element alloys, nickel-base superalloys, ultra-high-temperature ceramics, intermetallics, nanostructured metals, and amorphous and disordered solids, targeting applications in high-temperature power conversion, aerospace and hypersonic structures, nuclear and fusion reactor environments, lightweight transportation, and solid-state energy storage. At the fundamental level, our research seeks to understand and control how defects — dislocations, interfaces, grain boundaries, and the emerging class of defect phases — govern the mechanical and functional behavior of materials operating under extreme conditions. We build the measurement alongside the science, pioneering advanced characterization modalities including in situ and operando mechanical testing inside electron microscopes, direct-electron-detector-enabled diffraction and imaging in the SEM, 4D-STEM and high-resolution EBSD defect metrology, and high-throughput combinatorial synthesis coupled to rapid property screening. Building on these capabilities, we are developing self-driving, AI-accelerated autonomous laboratories that close the loop between synthesis, characterization, and modeling for materials in extreme environments.
