UCSB Materials Ph.D. Students Win Two 2014 Best Paper Awards

Monday, November 9, 2015

Thomas (Tom) Nizolek and Jaclyn (Jackie) Avallone, Ph.D. candidates in Materials have been awarded the 2014 Buehler Technical Paper Merit Award for Excellence and the Jacquet-Lucas International Metallographic Award. The award-winning paper provides an overview of a unique accumulative roll bonding technique used to synthesize bulk nanolaminates of Cu and Nb.

The paper addresses advances in the understanding of multi-scale mechanical phenomena that ultimately control the response of metallic nanolaminates. The original article, “Processing and Deformation Behavior of Bulk Cu-Nb Nanolaminates,” was published as the cover of the February issue of Advanced Materials and Processes and as an article in Metallography, Microstructure and Analysis in 2014. The award, sponsored by the Buehler company, was presented at the Microscopy and Microanalysis meeting in Hartford Connecticut.
