Current interests include design, synthesis and exploitation of nanoscopically defined materials in applications ranging from next-generation microelectronic devices to diagnostic agents for detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Major emphasis is on development of methods for facile synthesis of functionalized macromolecules with well-controlled architectures, including dendrimers (synthetic analogs of 3-dimensional proteins), as well as transitioning free radical polymerization (“living” free radical polymerization) from a laboratory curiosity into a practical method for preparing macromolecules of narrow polydispersity.
