In electronic materials, recent research has been on growth of GaN, AlN and ZnO films and investigation of their optical and electronic properties. A variety of film growth and characterization facilities (laser ablation, hydride vapor phase epitaxy, optical equipment) have been constructed. In structural materials, research has focused on materials aspects and failure of thermal barrier coatings, including development of techniques for non-destructive measurement of stress in solids using piezospectroscopy.
